Below is a guest post from one of our fabulous summer interns, Jenny Karson.  Admittedly, Jenny wasn't much of a beer lover nor a beer drinker for that matter before joining the team  (we know what you are thinking- oh the horror, oh the abomination!)

However, after a weekend in the mountains where we did a beer tasting/education seminar with all our interns (we tasted over 30 different types and brands of that night) and helping us at several Brew Runs where she got a taste of real, hand crafted Colorado brews, we believe we've converted Jenny to the dark side.  No seriously, she's found a real love for dark beer!

Here is Jenny's post with some great insights on finding that perfect beer for your non-beer loving friends.


Hey there Non Beer Drinkers, it’s time for you to WAKE UP AND SMELL THE BREWS!!  Right now you’re probably reading this, wine in hand while watching Family Feud and thinking that you will never be convinced to like beer. Well stop “WINING” and give a beer a second chance!

I was once a "hater" like you but the more I tasted and the more I learned, I developed an appreciation and even love for the frothy substance.  You see, beer is one of the most diverse, complex, and fascinating beverages out there.  From chocolatey-sweet to grapefruit- bitter, and all kinds in between; I guarantee you that there is a beer out there for everyone.  

These five are a good place to start. 

1. Pilsner Urquell from Plzensky Prazdroj

Sure you have tried big name beers like Budweiser and Miller, well this is like those  but not so cheap tasting and flavorless. Pilsner Urquell is THE original pilsner, and it  has a sweet mellow flavor with light spicy-citrusy hops. Think like your tasting  biscuits with a kick to them. Now how can you go wrong with that?? 

 2. Hefe-Weissbier Naturtrüb from Paulaner

This is a great starter beer in general, and this is one of the best. This ale is characterized by sweet banana and clove flavors with a creamy. It provides a luscious mouthfeel and a crisp finish. (Highly recommended ) 


3. Peach (Pêche) Lambic from Lindemans 

This is your perfect summer beer, and fruity so this one is all the girl’s favorite,  including myself. Also the good part is it really doesn’t even really taste like beer! It’s comparable to a ripe summer peach in fizzy beer form. It's deliciously fruity with a nice sour edge.

4. Nut Brown Ale from Samuel Smith Old Brewery: 

This one is for your fall time brew happy hours. Nut Brown beers features roasted nut and buttery caramel flavoring, adding a perfect touch and taste to your buds.  This is a good one to try if you're not a fan of bitterness in beer.

5. Left Hand Milk Stout from Left Hand Brewing Company: 

This is proof that dark beers don't have to be bitter or burnt-tasting. This milk stout  tastes like silky espresso poured over ice and swirled with cream. You’re going to  want refills on this one!

So there you have it, 5 beers for the beer haters. Now put down your wine and start heading out to craft breweries to try these amazing and one of a kind beers. In no time, you will be retired from the wine and on to new and better drinks out there.

If you've been to a Brew run then you know what it is all about:  people, fun and beer.  In that order.
We couldn't do what we do if it weren't for our amazing participants, volunteers, fans and brewery partners.  So cheer to you!
This post though is all about the people and the types of people that attend our brew run.

We've had groups of college students at our events, out to win as much free beer as possible participating in our Beer Olympics games.  

We have the young professionals and beer aficionados who grew up during this craft beer boom and come to the events looking to socialize and try as many new brews as they can.  

We have the hard core runners. One in particular who comes to many of our events, usually right after completing (an typically winning) another event.  He shows up right before the start, the bib from his previous race still safety pined to his shorts and if he doesn't finish 1st he is not far behind.

We have the dog owners, who bring their furry friends out because our events are some of the only in the state that allow dogs on the course and at the after party.

Lastly, we have the families.  This is a section of our participant base that has been consistently growing over the last year and we are happy to see it!

Parents bring kids of all ages to our events.  From stroller bound babies to tots on bicycles to the 9 year old who won it all at our Blue Spruce Brewery run last year.  We couldn't be more ecstatic to see families getting outside and getting active together, especially when the rate of childhood obesity and related behavior disorders are increasing at an astonishing rate every year. 

There was a recent interview on a local radio show that interviewed a Colorado state ranger.  He said that some physicians are going so far as to write prescriptions for kids (really meant for the parents) to go to the park and play.   

So, whenever we see parents setting a good example by signing up for a run and then bringing their kids (whether the kids are running, walking, biking or just riding along in a stroller) it makes us want to buy them a beer.

So let's do it. 

In tribute to Mother's Day and with Father's Day right around the corner, we will buy any parents that show up with their kids at our Pikes Peak Brew run on May 30th or our AC Golden Brew run on June 27th a free beer!

The history of Beer Olympics

We are all about having a good time here at RMBR headquarters.  So when we were brainstorming ways to get you runners to hang around after the run we thought: why not drinking games?

Now we are not talking about throwback games from your college days of quarters and beer pong, guzzling down as much cheap, disgusting beer as fast as possible.


We are talking about games that challenge you on every level:  Can you do burpees?  Can you search and find the cones we've hidden around the complex?  Can you balance a beer on your hand and race across the room?  Can you drink your beer without hands?  These are just some of the fun challenges you will face if you join our famous Beer Olympics games post run. 

Now where did we get the ideas for our challenges?  

#1:  History: 

People have been playing drinking games before your great Grandpappy had hair on his chest. Drinking games in ancient China involved exchanging riddles and in some German speaking countries a favorite pastime was Bierkastenlauf or beer crate running.   This is where a team of two carries a crate of beer for several kilometers and must consume all of the bottles prior to crossing the finish line (we will definitely include this challenge in our next brew run).  

Here in the U.S., we are still in our infancy when it comes to homegrown drinking games.  Gelande Quaffing was born on a fateful day in 1986 in Jackson Hole, WY when a mug of beer was slid across a bar-top a little too quickly.  A fast-thinking young man caught the beer right before it hit the ground and the sport was born.   Gelande Quaffing is now an internationally known competition with teams that compete from all over the world backed by big name sponsors.   When we incorporate this into our Beer Olympics, make sure to do a spin move before catching the beer, this will earn you extra points. 

#2:  Around the world: 

Germany seems to be the breeding ground for unusual drinking games.  In the game of Hammerschlagen, every player gets a nail and sticks it in a tree.  There is one community hammer and each person gets a swing and then passes their hammer on.  The first person to sink their nail in gets a free shot and the last person has to buy the next round.  Dwight Schrute would be proud. 

Sure, we all played quarters in college but what about Irish Quarters?  This game involves players spinning a coin, chugging a beer, refilling the cup and then grabbing the coin before it stops spinning.  If you can’t finish in time, go again! 

So there you go, a short synopsis of what to possibly expect in our Beer Olympics games.  If you leave with a giant cone on your head, we assume you had a pretty good time. 


The EPIC fight against cancer

If you didn't know it already, Rocky Mountain Brew Runs has partnered up with Colorado based non-profit Epic Experience for our 2015 Brew run series. 
This amazing organization takes adults fighting cancer on memorable and thrilling outdoor adventures like white water kayaking, rock climbing and horseback riding.  These experiences can literally be life-changing for these brave individuals as you will read below in a guest blog post from one of their campers who is also an amazing runner.  Sure, we love our craft beer but it is always about something more.  Make sure next time you take that first drink, cheers organizations like Epic Experience and all the athletes out there fighting for their lives.  

"Cancer became a household term for me March 5, 2014 when I was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer.     
efore that, I was working fulltime, going out with my friends, running 4-5 days a week….basically, living the dream.  Now, I continue to do all those things, making adjustments as needed, but with a different  goal - to keep doing until I can’t. 

After I was diagnosed, all I thought about was cancer, why me, I’ve never smoked so why lung cancer, my life sucks, and more cancer.  That was pretty much my focus until a social worker at the University of Colorado Cancer Center told me about Epic Experience.  Epic Experience is a non-profit organization, which offers week-long outdoor experiences for cancer thrivers.  

I went to camp in June 2014 and it changed my life.  Epic pushed me beyond my self-imposed emotional and physical barriers, and allowed me to find that inner strength I needed to tackle my fears head on.   

They also helped me deal with my apprehension around whitewater, which was well established years prior to my recent diagnosis!  I was able to talk about my cancer with total strangers for the first time and I was able to get the support of fellow cancer thrivers to feel energized instead of sad.  I was able to take back my life and not let cancer define me.

The one thing that stayed solid throughout this journey has been my running.  I have been a runner for most of my life.  I have run 24 hour relays, dozens of half marathons, 6 marathons and a handful of other races.  After each race, I felt a sense of accomplishment no matter how heinous the run was.  I have been able to push myself through some pretty tough race conditions, mental and emotional blocks and, each time, I knew that I was the one who got myself to the finish line and no one else did that for me.  I liken my cancer to a marathon.  If I think of running a marathon, it becomes too daunting, but if I can break it up into pieces, it becomes more manageable; 5K, 10K, half marathon, 15 miles, 20 miles and full marathon.  Just like a marathon, if I think about my cancer, its treatments, the tests, etc., it becomes too daunting and unfathomable.  But, if I break it down and just concentrate on doing my daily runs, finishing different treatments like they were races and making each day a “winning” day, I can manage anything and I will get to that finish line, hands in the air, knowing I just finished the race of my life!

From a garage......

Rocky Mountain Brew runs

Here is another post in our guest blog series:  Ian Clark from BRU Boulder tells us about his small beginnings brewing in his garage to big time chef and brew master!

"In retrospect it probably started when I first met the world of food at age 14.  It was my first job working in a professional kitchen and I fell in love.  The smell of fresh baked bread, the technique of chopping vegetables in perfectly even pieces, the stress, the fast pace...  From that first moment I knew I had found the place I belonged.  If I wasn't in school I was in the kitchen, and then school actually became the kitchen after my acceptance to culinary school.  I had fallen in love with cooking. And years later I learned that cooking and brewing are very similar things.  

My father-in-law introduced me to brewing.  We started home-brewing together on the weekends and I, ever the "tinker-ist" immediately needed to write my own recipes and brew all-grain beers.  So I started playing, the same way I play in the kitchen.  Testing recipes, perfecting equipment.  The next thing I knew I had too much beer and my wife was telling me that we had to do something about my "hobby."  That something became turning our garage into a living, breathing, nano-brewery where we actually sold the suds I was creating.  Sneaking in minutes late at night and on the weekends after my more than full-time job as a Executive Chef at Centro and my wife's job in marketing we were able to start selling BRU to local liquor stores and restaurants in Boulder.  

And while I had never imagined having a brewery in my garage, I had always dreamed of having my own restaurant.  The garage was just a stepping stone so when I saw the restaurant space in East Boulder (our now home for BRU) and saw that it would work for both a brewery and restaurant I was sold.  To bring my passion and craft for both brewing and cooking was a dream come true.  Today, BRU handbuilt ales & eats has been open for just over a year, but sharing my ales and eats is still a thrill.  Tomorrow, well, tomorrow I’m not sure what it will bring, but if it brings you to BRU, swing by and say hello."
